Chapter Thirty-Five

Mara speaks

I loved being in bed with Finn.

Granted, I’d slept next to him many times before, but this was different. Better. There wasn’t anything I didn’t love about lying beside him. Firstly, there was his body. His skin was a deep golden shade reminiscent of desert sands, but his body hair was the same white blond as the hair on his head, giving him the appearance of having been dusted with snow. The pale curls clustered above his heart were soft and thick, and I couldn’t stop stroking them. What’s more, my nose was pressed against his neck just underneath his jaw, and he smelled amazing. I didn’t think I could ever get enough of him.

Aside from taking pleasure in his very pleasing form, Finn himself only got kinder and more loving the longer we were together. When our supper was delivered Finn leapt out of bed and threw on his clothes, then he collected the food and brought everything to me. After we ate, he climbed back into bed, took me into his arms, and proved yet again that choosing him was the best decision I’d ever made.

Now I lay on my side with my head on his shoulder, my belly pressed against him as I tugged at the curls on his chest. “How are we going to lay together once I’m as big as an elephant?” I asked. “If I get much bigger I won’t be able to reach you.”

“You won’t get that big,” he mumbled. “And even if you do, it’s only temporary. Soon enough we’ll have our boy with us, and then you will be regular sized again.”

Our boy. Finn hadn’t only claimed me, he’d also claimed the baby as his, and it made me so happy I thought my heart might burst. “We still need to pick a name,” I said, but his only response was a few gentle snores. As I let myself drift off to sleep, I hoped I would dream about our son. Dream I did, but not in the way I’d hoped.

My dreams had been chaotic ever since the attack on The Seat. More often than not they were terrifying, and I often woke soaked in sweat. I’d never told anyone how bad they were; most didn’t know anything about my dreams, and I wanted to keep it that way. Only Finn knew how awful they could be, and that was only due to all of the time we spent together on the journey back to Teg’urnan. That night, as I lay on a hard bed in a soldier’s garrison, my dreams weren’t bad, but they were some of the strangest dreams of my life.

The dream began pleasantly enough. Finn and I were sitting in a field. It was a cold day, but the sun was bright and the skies were clear. Finn looked at me and smiled, and I was happy.

I was also confused.

“Finn, why is there only one?” I asked. I shielded my eyes from the glare of the single sun, and wondered where the other had gotten to.
